Whether you want to limit your property, design your garden or protect from prying eyes: fences not only serve these purposes, but can also be an eye-catcher in your garden.
The house and property are only protected by a fence. In this way, uninvited guests can be kept away and prying eyes stay outside. Children and animals can also play safely in the garden without going directly onto the street. With our fastening tips, do-it-yourselfers can build a fence that is durable and strong.
Plan first, then get started
Fences are plentiful. Corrosion-resistant metal designs are durable and easy to maintain. But wooden fences also have numerous advantages to offer. They score with a natural look and can be processed flexibly. Before installation, however, the following applies: ask the building authority of the respective municipality whether there are any laws or rules to be observed. In this way you can find out whether the planned fence to limit the property requires approval, what height is permitted and how far it must be from the border. Once all the framework conditions have been clarified, you can start the project.
Protect posts from moisture
So that you can enjoy your new fence for as long as possible, the wooden posts used in the ground area must be protected against splashing water and rising damp. A construction made of concrete point foundations and post supports, for example, is suitable for this. This gives the fence a stable hold.
First, determine the position of the foundation along the property line using a guide line on pegs and align it horizontally with a spirit level. Then you mark the positions of the posts. Distances of 2 to 2.5 meters are recommended for chain link fences and conventional system fences. You can usually find a precise specification in the assembly instructions.
Then dig the holes for the foundations: 40 x 40 cm with a depth of at least 80 centimeters. The hole is then paneled with wooden boards and filled with concrete by tamping down several layers with a batten until the hole is filled up to the top edge of the paneling. Then, level the surface of the foundation with a straight batten of wood to level the surface. Now the H post base can be set directly into the wet concrete. Align it with a spirit level and fix it with wooden slats. After about one or two days the foundation has hardened, you can remove the formwork, align the post vertically and attach it to the H-post base.
Post bases or ground sockets are a good choice because they prevent the steel or wooden post from coming into direct contact with the ground, protecting the wood from rotting and the metal from corrosion. These can be embedded in concrete, but can also be anchored to concrete surfaces and existing foundations with bolt anchors and concrete screws made of stainless steel. One attachment alternative is an injection system in connection with anchor rods: Here, the boreholes are also completely filled and sealed when fastening, so that no moisture can penetrate. Post screws are ideal for screwing post bases or ground sockets to the wooden supports. Steel bolts can also be used for this purpose. The material is also an important criterion here: Only use post screws and bolt anchors made of stainless steel.
Mount fence elements

Once the posts are in place, you can start connecting the posts to the fence panels. For metal fences, the appropriate metal brackets including accessories are usually supplied. For wooden fences, fence fittings or brackets with suitable stainless screws are suitable for connecting the fence elements to the posts. Walls made of gabions, i.e. metal cages filled with stones, are also popular. If these are built into longer and higher fences, they should also be anchored in concrete with posts without contact with the ground.
